adar is located in the very centre of the Croatian Adriatic, in the most indented part of the Adriatic archipelago. Zadar is a well developed tourist region with over 1200 km of coast, about 50 towns and villages, 150 islands, islets and rocks, innumerable coves and idyllic beaches with unspoiled environment, a crystal clear sea and abundant Mediterranean vegetation.
It’s is a town by the sea! It is floating on the reef and closing from times immemorial a gap between itself and land, a harbor that was a pulse of its history, an element, and a cause. All the maritime and land ways led to this harbor and on their crossings the ancient marketplace was made, which became the origin of the Town, the very spring well of its life's courses.
Zadar that ancient Greek Idassa or Roman Jadera, although it changed many masters in its turbulent history, developed thanks to its excellent natural positioning and naturally protected port. Its beauty, cultural and historical monuments, museums and the natural beauty of its surroundings make it a frequent tourist destination. It is on the main coastal road and thus maintains the attributes of an interesting thoroughfare. It is the economic and cultural centre of this part of Central Dalmatia, and it lies on the edge of the three Croatian national parks: Paklenica, Velebit and Kornati.
The City of Zadar is not only known for its historical and cultural monuments but also for its amply supplied vegetable and fish markets on the peninsula (a part of the old city). The market is daily supplied with fresh fruit and vegetables from the rich hinterland of "Ravni Kotari", the fruitful waters of Lake Vrana and the islands of Ugljan and Pasman. Judged by the variety of goods on offer, it is one of the largest markets in Croatia. The market is not only frequented for supplies, but also for the bustle, the abundance of colors and the haggle with the local women merchants.
Tourist attraction of Zadar is also based on the combination of yachting tourism, various types of accommodation and catering services, atmosphere, charming beaches and promenades, excursions to closer and farther surroundings, as well as interesting cultural, artistic and entertainment events and programs and on especially valuable cultural and historical monuments.
Zadar has top conditions for sports and recreational activities. It has numerous tennis courts, as well as a football field, basketball and handball court. It offers great opportunities for water activities, such as sailing, windsurfing, rowing, scuba--diving, angling.
In numerous restaurants and taverns of Zadar tourists should taste homemade specialties. Among drinks, the first place belongs to the famous liqueur Maraskino. As early as the 19th century, this unique drink was a favorite drink at European courts (London, Vienna and Moscow) and has been produced in Zadar since 1821.
The historical part of Zadar is fascinating to all those who respect historical monuments and cultural heritage. The church of St. Donat, the symbol of the city, is a must see. The museums of Zadar: the Archaeological Museum (established in 1830), one of the most important in Croatia, with about 80,000 exhibits from the Stone Age to the late Middle Ages, the National Museum with the Art Gallery and the Department of Natural Sciences, the Maritime Museum with exhibits of the development of navigation in northern Dalmatia, as well as the Permanent Exhibition of Sacral Art with about a thousand valuable exhibits from the past centuries, known under the popular name The Gold and Silver of Zadar (Zlato i Srebro Zadra).
Various Zadar's islands have all the choices needed for worthy tourist destination; moreover their full potential has not yet been accomplished. The most well known and tourist valorized islands are Pasman, Silba, Premuda, Ist, Molat, Iz, Rava. The magnificent parks Telascica and Mir are not to be missed.
